The Máté Winery is an organic family-owned and run estate in the prestigious Santa Restituta zone - the temperate, seaward zone of Montalcino. Among the Máté’s 27 hectares of Mediterranean woods of herbs and wild fruit are 6,5 hectares of vineyards, planted in extremely varied terroir between 320 and 420 meters above sea level. Varietals and clones, specifically chosen for these various sites and planted to a high density, include Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The carefully selected hand-picked grapes are fermented in small temperature-controlled stainless steel and wood vats and the wines are aged for up to three years in Allier French oak. Ferenc Máté is the author of three books which recount the experiences of his family’s move to Tuscany from New York. The books have been translated into 14 languages and have sold over a million copies worldwide.
